What Are The Reasons Our Clients Ask For Tree Removal?

The tree has outgrown the garden, patio, and surrounding area.

It has grown too close to nearby houses, buildings, roads, telephone lines, or other structures.

It’s in poor health, which could pose a risk to property or individuals.

It is infested with insects, fungi, or other harmful pathogens.

It has been damaged by strong winds, snow, or ice.

It is hindering the growth of other trees, hedges, shrubs, and plants.

The tree needs to be removed to make way for new construction or a change in land use.

It obstructs the views from your property.

It is time to replace the old tree with a new one, or a shrub or hedge.

How Do We Normally Fell A Tree In Nottingham?

Usually, we use one of two methods: Straight felling or sectional felling. The method we choose will depend on the specific situation. Let’s look at both methods.

Straight Felling

The most common method is straight felling. This involves cutting the tree at the base of the trunk and allowing it to fall to the ground in a controlled manner.

How do we do it?

To control how and when the tree should fall, we first need to create what is known as a hinge.

To form the hinge, we begin by making a face notch (also called a directional notch) in the direction we want it to fall. The angle of the face notch should be approximately 60–70 degrees, and it should be made to around 25% of the trunk’s thickness.

Next, we make a back cut. This is a horizontal cut made from the opposite side of the trunk, aimed towards the face notch we just created. It is crucial to leave approximately 2–4 cm uncut, ensuring we don’t cut all the way through to the face notch. This uncut section forms the important hinge.

In other words, the trunk is now cut almost entirely through, except for this 2–4 cm section.

As the tree rests on the hinge, minimal force is needed to make it fall. With the help of wedges, ropes, slings, and manual effort, we can guide it to fall in the direction of the face notch in a controlled way.

The face notch ensures the tree doesn’t fall sideways or backwards. It has only one option: to fall in the direction of the face notch.

While straight felling is the simplest and most common method, it’s not always possible to use this technique for larger trees in Nottingham. This is often due to limited space, with the danger of causing damage to nearby buildings or infrastructure.

When there isn’t enough space to use the straight felling method, we opt for sectional felling instead.

Sectional Felling

Sectional felling is a more labour-intensive method, but it enables us to safely take down a tree regardless of the circumstances.

We can carry out sectional felling in two ways: By using a lift or by climbing up (with appropriate safety equipment). The choice of method will depend on the specific situation, such as the tree’s size, the surroundings, and potential hazards.

We begin by removing all the branches. Once all the branches are removed, we cut off the top section, typically between 1 and 2 metres in length.

This section is then either lowered safely to the ground using ropes or allowed to fall in a controlled manner.

Once the top section is safely on the ground, we proceed by cutting off the next section, and so on, until the entire tree is on the ground in sections.

This felling method allows us to remove any tree, regardless of the space available.

We Can Also Remove The Tree Stump

Once the tree has been removed, the stump will remain.

Now, the question is:

Would you like the stump to be removed, or would you prefer to keep it?

If you would like it removed, we can take care of that for you as well.

We typically use a machine called a stump grinder to remove the stump. This machine can grind away any stump, regardless of its size, tree type, or condition.

Normally, we grind the stump to about 30 cm below ground level. After that, we typically fill the hole with wood chips from the stump and add a top layer of soil (or the natural top layer, depending on the area). This provides a smooth, natural finish.

For instance, if the stump were located in a lawn, we would add a layer of soil, and within a few weeks, new grass would begin to grow where the stump once stood.

However, if you prefer a different filling material, simply let us know, and we will accommodate your request.

Before we leave, we will tidy up and ensure everything looks neat.

Safety Is Our First Priority At All Times

Felling often involves certain risks, which is why safety is our top priority. Before we begin the job, we assess the tree and its surroundings to identify any potential hazards. Once this evaluation is complete, we will determine what we deem to be the safest and most secure approach.
