Why Should A Hedge Be Trimmed?
Regular trimming of hedges offers several benefits. Some of the most important include:
Aesthetics: To maintain a well-groomed and visually pleasing hedge, it needs to be trimmed and cared for regularly.
Desired shape: Regular trimming helps maintain and create the shape and structure you desire. The form can be a key element in your garden’s design, adding an extra dimension to your outdoor space.
Control overgrowth: Trimming prevents them from becoming too large, creating space for other plants and allowing you to expand or reorganise your outdoor area.
Optimal health: By removing dead or diseased branches, you encourage healthy new growth.
Fewer pests: Regular trimming reduces potential hiding spots for animals such as rats, mice, and foxes.
More sunlight: Trimming allows more sunlight to reach your outdoor area.
Better views: By maintaining growth, you open up space and improve the views from your property.
Increased privacy: A well-trimmed hedge can offer privacy and a sense of tranquillity, blocking the view from prying eyes outside.
Improved functionality: A neatly trimmed hedge makes maintenance easier and provides better access to other areas of the garden. The outdoor space becomes more practical and functional with easier access to flower beds, paths, and other garden features.
Disease prevention: Regular trimming helps remove potential sources of disease, improving the overall health of your garden.
More flowers: Trimming can encourage greater flower production, resulting in a colourful and vibrant outdoor atmosphere during spring and summer.
Extended lifespan: Regular trimming can significantly extend the lifespan of a hedge.
A general rule to remember: Ideally, one should not remove more than 25% of the branches, as this can make it harder for it to recover. Additionally, some types of hedges may require more precise timing and care for effective trimming.

The Best Time Of Year To Trim Hedges
In the UK, it is best to trim during late winter or early spring, typically between late February and early March. This period is considered ideal because:
Dormant period: Hedges are in a dormant or semi-dormant state during the winter. As the plants are not in growth mode, they are less susceptible to stress from pruning, lose less sap, and the cuts heal more quickly.
Pathogens are also dormant: Many insects, fungi, and pathogens are dormant in winter, making it less likely that they will attack.
Bird nesting season: The UK has strict regulations to protect nesting birds. Trimming before the nesting season (usually early spring) avoids disturbing the birds and ensures compliance with the law.
Stimulate robust growth: Trimming in late winter or early spring encourages healthy new growth, resulting in increased density and better shape.
Optimal visibility: When trimming deciduous hedges (which shed their leaves), you have better visibility of the structure, making it easier to identify which branches to cut, as well as spot any potential issues.
Favourable weather conditions: Late winter and early spring typically bring milder weather than the harsher winter months, making it a more comfortable time to work.
Can one trim during other seasons?
While the primary trimming for most hedges should be done in winter, there are some good reasons for trimming again during summer or autumn.
Here are a few benefits of trimming more than once:
If there are damaged or diseased branches, it is advisable to remove them.
Once the leaves have fully grown, it becomes easier to achieve the desired shape.
You can open up the hedge to improve air circulation and allow more sunlight to penetrate.
You can trim back overgrowth.
Most hedges should be trimmed once a year. However, the following types can benefit from more frequent trimming:
Deciduous: If you have a fast-growing deciduous hedge, such as beech or privet, it may be beneficial to trim it in both spring and late summer. This helps maintain its shape and dense structure throughout the growing season.
Formal: Formal hedges may require trimming twice (or more) a year to preserve the desired shape, especially for geometric designs or structured garden features.
Coniferous: Some conifers, like thuja or juniper, respond well to frequent pruning. Trimming them in spring and again in late summer can help keep them compact and healthy.
It is important to tailor the trimming schedule to the specific needs of your hedge type and the local climate conditions. If you have any questions about trimming frequency or need assistance, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us.

What Is Our Process For Trimming Hedges?
It is important for hedges to be as dense as possible from top to bottom, as they are typically intended to provide privacy. It should be trimmed so that the top is slightly narrower than the bottom. This shape ensures that the lower branches on the sides receive enough sunlight to grow and fill out the body.
We typically set up guide strings to maintain a straight line when trimming. These strings are attached to stakes placed at the ends of the hedgerow. The strings serve as a reference when trimming.
Usually, four strings are sufficient – one at the top and one at the bottom on each side. For very tall hedges, an additional intermediate string on each side can be helpful.
We typically start by creating a clean, straight surface on top. Then, we move to the sides, using the guide strings to trim it as evenly as possible. To achieve the best results, we use both manual shears and motorised saws. We normally trim the ends last.
While this is our standard method, the approach may vary depending on the type of hedge and the desired shape.
Trimming usually stimulates new, vigorous growth, making it the perfect time for nourishment. A light fertilisation with compost or slow-release fertiliser is recommended. Thorough watering will also help promote new growth and aid in the absorption of nutrients.
Removal Of Hedges In Nottingham
Do you need help to remove a hedge?
Our experienced team can remove it for you, whether it’s due to overgrowth, disease, or if you’re looking to make space for something new.
There are many reasons why customers choose removal. It could be that it’s old or has lost its shape. Sometimes, diseases or pest infestations make it necessary to remove it. Other times, customers simply wish to change the design of their garden.
Before starting the job, we always check for any water pipes, cables, or other underground utilities to avoid damaging infrastructure.
Typically, we begin by cutting the hedge down to ground level, leaving only the roots. If the roots are not removed, it will probably continue to grow. Therefore, if you plan to plant a new hedge, lay a lawn, or repurpose the area, it’s essential to remove the roots.
To remove the roots, we generally use a mini excavator, a stump grinder, or other small machinery.
Once it is gone, we ensure all waste is collected and disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner.
The Cost Of Hedge Trimming In Nottingham
Our price will be determined by these factors:
The larger the hedge, the higher the price is likely to be.
The amount of trimming required will also affect the cost. For example, trimming only one side will be cheaper, while lowering the top will incur a slightly higher charge.
If its health is poor (for instance, if it is infested with pests or fungi), this could increase the cost.
The type of hedge will also play a role in the price. A hardy one made of evergreen needles is easier and cheaper to trim than one with small, delicate leaves.
The price will usually be lower if we have easy access with both machinery and personnel.
A healthy, recently maintained hedge will be cheaper to prune than one that is overgrown.
Simple trimming is less expensive than creating intricate shapes or topiary, as these require more time and skill.
Based on these factors, the following are our prices:
| Hedge Length | Price (£) |
| 5 metres | 75 – 200 |
| 10 metres | 100 – 300 |
| 15 metres | 200 – 400 |
| 20 metres | 300 – 500 |
| 25 metres | 400 – 600 |
| 30 metres | 500 – 700 |
| Prices updated as of October 2026 | |
However, there may be specific factors related to your job that could affect the price. Therefore, the prices above are intended as a guide.
